Best Fishing Multi-Tool

Fishing is one of the most popular participation sports in the world. No wonder, what’s not to like? From the peace and quiet of putting a line in at your favorite spot on the local river to wrestling with a big one off a boat in the middle of the ocean, fishing has a lot to offer.

As a Multi-Tool MacGyver, I know that having the right tools for the task makes getting it done much more enjoyable. And the same goes for pastimes like fishing. I could carry all the individual tools I need with me. I already carry a bag I throw things I might need into. But who wants to have to dig around in your bag looking for the right tool when you’ve got a big one on the line? Why not carry all the tools you want in one tool – a fishing multi-tool?

The best multi-tool will keep the right tools handy for the common tasks you’re faced with when you’re fishing. The multi-tool that will be your best partner and the one I highly recommend you get hold of is the Gerber Diesel Multi-Plier. The MacGyver recommendation is “Buy It”!

If Black isn’t your thing, there’s a stainless steel version as well

One of the many reasons I rate the Diesel so highly is the one hand opening pliers. Grab the Diesel in the closed position and give it a flick with your wrist. The pliers will deploy and the handles will open. How handy is that if your other hand is full of a fishing rod, a line or a big fish? The pliers on the Diesel are a good set of needle nose which are ideal for getting a hook out of anything at the end of your line. Congratulations if you get the pliers to fully deploy the first time you try to open them. It took a bit of practice to master but it doesn’t take much practice and it’s well worth it to have pliers that are so easily accessible one-handed. When you do master it, don’t be surprised if you don’t find yourself flicking it open just for the fun of it!

Best Fishing Multi-ToolThere are a lot of other tools you’ll find very useful on the Diesel. Filet your catch right there on the spot with the Diesel’s combo blade – half straight edge and half serrated. Or remove some scales with the very sharp saw blade. Or maybe you aren’t catching anything today. Let’s blame that on your hooks not being sharp enough. Whip out the metal file on the Diesel and get them pointy again and get back to hooking a big one.

Besides the main tools, there are a lot of other tools that will help you out. There are a Phillips head screwdriver and 3 sizes of Flathead screwdriver, wire cutters, and a can opener. And of course, I’m not going to recommend a multi-tool for fishing if it didn’t have a bottle opener for keeping yourself well hydrated.

All the tools lock into position and release with a sliding tab on the handles so you’re not going to have a blade or screwdriver flip back on you while you’re using it.

The Diesel comes in stainless steel or a black oxide finish on stainless steel. It’s obviously a personal choice but I prefer the look of the black and as a bonus, the black finish adds to the corrosion resistance. Could come in handy when you spend so much time around water.

The one-handed plier opening and all the other very useful tools will make your fishing trips even more enjoyable. The Diesel is a great choice for the best fishing multi-tool crown.
