28 Unique Multi-Tools That Actually Work!

Time for something different?

You’re a Multi-Tool MacGyver who likes to do things a little differently. You’ve seen all the mainstream multi-tools from the big players – the Leathermans, the Gerbers, the SOGs and the Victorinoxii.  And you probably own a few of them.

They’re great multi-tools and they do a great job for sure but they’re a bit boring. Now you want to find a multi-tool that’s got something different going. You want a unique multi-tool. Maybe it’s got some different sorts of tools and it looks different. You’re absolutely not going to mistake this one for any of your other multi-tools!

Check out these weird multi-tools and choose your favorite one (or two?). Time to weird up your collection.

1. HexFlex Adventure Tool

This little 2.5 inch snowflake shaped one-piece multi-tool gives you 15 tools in the palm of your hand. It focuses on a range of drivers for Phillips, Flathead and Hex. Cunningly, the center hole is a 1/4″ hex driver. Comes in stealthy black or regular silver.

2. Survival Multi-Tool Credit Card Sized

Slip this multi-tool into the wallet you grab when you’re bugging out. Looking like a DIY kit for that model plane you built as a child, it’s got a range of metal tools to help you survive in the wilderness. Cut off a fishing hook, attach to a line, drop into water and that’s fish for lunch. Attach an arrowhead to a spear, throw and that’s meat for dinner.

3. Rike Knife Slingshot Multi-Tool

A multi-tool for hunting. Practice with the slingshot and you’ll be able to feed yourself. There’s a couple of full sized knives, one a flipper and the other with a gutting hook. Use the full-sized saw to gather firewood and build the fire to cook your catch.

Available at Knife Center

4. Rexford Utility Tool (RUT) V3

The Japanese Seigaiha motif you see on the front of this titanium multi-tool is hand machined by knife designer Todd Rexford. Slide out the standard razor blade or open a bottle, or tighten a screw.

5. Ti2 Para-Biner PB-4 Green Ano

Take this one out of your pocket and you’ll be blinding those around you with the bright green anodized finish. Pry bar and hex drivers and bottle opener are added to the generously sized para-biner. If the green is too much, there are a lot of other more discrete colors to choose from.

Available at Ti2design

6. Lil Trucker

Just what you need when you’re going off the grid – a hatchet blade with a lot of other tools. There’s a Sawzall replaceable blade in the handle and the different sized hex drivers? And the hammer and nail puller? Plenty of other tools here to keep you under the radar – if that’s what you want. Lil Trucker to small for you? Have a look at the bigger brother – Truckers Friend.

7. Boker Plus Toucan

This is so small you can wear it around your neck. 3 inches ain’t much. Keep it in the included sheath though otherwise, the little knife could cause you some damage. Open a bottle or pry a nail.

Available at Amazon

8. Boker Plus Hawkit

Another neck carry multi-tool that’s shaped like an ax. At 3.75 inches, you’re not going to fell any tall trees with it but it will open your next Fedex delivery. Or open a wooden crate with the pry bar and nail puller. Once that’s done, open your favorite beverage.

9. Klax Lumberjack Axe Head

Another axe multi-tool but this one’s not one you hang around your neck…..probably. All axes can chop wood but the Klax does that and 9 other things. Carry all this functionality around with the in-built carabiner. Don’t forget to carry around an axe handle as well (or use your multi-tool saw to make one) otherwise it’s going to be hard to use….

10. Geekey

Funded through the crowdsourcing site, Indiegogo, this 3 inch key-shaped multi-tool takes the prize for the most unique multi-tool ever. No, it’s not the closed wrenches, the bike spoke key or the wire bender. It’s definitely not the bottle opener. No, it’s the smoking pipe. Yep, a multi-tool shaped like a key with a smoking pipe. Unique? I thought so. Surely it’s the only multi-tool with a pipe but I found another one. See if you can find it on this list.

11. Move Comb

A comb with 10 tool tricks. We’ve all got a beard right? No? Me either. But if you do have one, why not keep a few tools stored away in the credit card slot in your wallet? Then whip it out to do some light wrenching, hex bit driving and beard combing.

12. Kniper Lifesaver

This is a bright green lifesaver dagger. It looks like it means business with the light glinting off its polished blade. But it’s more than that. A saw, fork, Phillips head and flat head screwdrivers, closed wrenches and other things to save yours or another MacGyver’s life. Mission accomplished, sit back and smoke a pipe. Stick some tobacco in the Kniper bowl and smoke it.

13. Swiss+Tech Utili-Key 6-in-1

You’ve got it – it looks like a key and has utility – it’s the Utili-Key. Swiss+Tech make a few different keychain multi-tools and I’ve got a couple. They’re cheap but made well. The unusual tool here is a small knife and a saw that’s protected from slicing you or your pocket by sliding together with a Phillips screwdriver. It really does add utility to your keychain.

14. BANG TI Military Shovel 15-in-1 Multifunction

If you’re out to survive the wilderness, a shovel with benefits that will fit in your pack will come in super handy. Besides the shovel you get an axe, hoe, hammer, screwdriver, flint, multi-knife, a bottle opener and the list goes on. Not for everyone but great for some.

15. TOPS Knives Atax Hand Axe

I’ve never used a hand axe, in fact, I didn’t know such a thing existed but this is what one looks like. It makes it onto this list just because it’s unusual but because it’s also a multi-tool. The axe is accompanied by a knife and a skinner and a lot of other tools to help you survive – things like a compass, inclinometer, and a clock.

Available at Amazon

16. Brook & Hunter MT-W-Axe

Wow, this axe looks weird. It’s an axe on one side, a hammer on the other and in the handle are a whole range of tools. Pliers, knife, can opener and screwdrivers to name a few. You can’t carry it in your pocket but you could carry it in a pocket of your camping pack or bug out bag. Check out the premium touch of the wood inlay in the handle.

17. Boonerings Man Ring Version 2.0

This would make a great wedding ring for any Multi-Tool MacGyver. It looks like a classy titanium ring but hang on, what this? Tucked away in the top of the ring are 5 tools. Flip out a small knife, comb (to keep your mustache and beard groomed during the wedding ceremony), saw and a serrated knife. And open a beer for your guests with the bottle opener. Send your ring size off and have one made to order.

18. Leatherman Tread

Multi-tools are all about carrying your tools around with you right? Some will clip onto your pocket or your belt, others can carabiner to a backpack or split ring to your keychain, this one wraps around your wrist.

29 tools in a stainless steel or black wearable bracelet. Choose either the metric or Imperial version. It’s certainly unusual and it’s controversial amongst multi-tool fans. You either think it’s a brilliantly innovative tool or you think it’s impractical and you’d need to be a tool to wear it. Me, I haven’t decided but if it’s your thing, go for it. Leatherman has just released a narrower version. The original is 1.2 inches (3.05 cms) wide, the new one is only .71 inches (1.8 cms). One for the ladies perhaps?

19. Klecker Daily Carry Phone Case

Don’t want to carry a separate multi-tool but want to just carry your phone and your 4 most commonly used tools? Well, Klecker has the perfect product for you. It’s a phone case with 4 slots to carry your 4 choices of tools from Kleckers range. There’s tools here like a fold-away knife, razor, pry tool, key blank, pliers and even a comb.

Available from Klecker Knives

20. SOG Baton

The Baton is SOG’s take on a new style of multi-tool for the urban environment. It gets its name from being long and skinny. There are 4 different models (Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4) that look similar but range in size from 5.8 to 7 inches and with different tool load outs from knives to pliers and the usual screwdriver heads. Obviously, you’re not going to carry this like you would most multi-tools but if this style suits your style, this could be one for you.

Available at Amazon

21. True Utility FIXR

Based on a carabiner form factor, this compact multi-tool will attach to anything with a loop. It’s not the 2o tools that make this one unusual but that True Utility has been able to pack in this many tools is impressive. The trick is the gold titanium coated rotating tool disc which means you can get a lot into a small space.

22. Dango Tactical Wallets

Dango has come up with a range of wallets that have a lot of good wallet features and incorporate a range of credit card sized multi-tools. These multi-tool cards are safety locked into chassis of the wallet. Means you can carry around tools like serrated edges, nail pryer and even a phone stand.

Available from Dango Products

23. Leatherman Crunch

A lot of multi-tools have folding pliers like the Leatherman Crunch so how does the Crunch make it onto this Unique Multi-Tool list.

The real unique feature here is that the Crunch has locking pliers. See the knob at the base of the left handle? Twist that and it will lock the pliers and means you can use the Crunch for a lot of different functions than you can use other multi-tool pliers for. It’s like having a mini vise in your pocket. There are other tools here that you find on ‘normal’ multi-tools like a serrated knife, file, and screwdrivers.

Available at Amazon

24. SOG SwitchPlier

The Switch Plier is SOG’s answer to Gerber’s Center Drive (reviewed here). Both of these multi-tools are focussed on the plier function and you can deploy them with one hand. The “switch” part of the model name refers to the way you can push a button and the spring loaded pliers flick out ready for use. They don’t have a locking mechanism like the Leatherman Crunch on this list. It’s not just a set of pliers though as it comes with other useful tools like a combo straight/serrated blade, screwdrivers and other tools.

25. Gerber Myth Archery Multi-Tool

Archery isn’t the most common or popular target sport and it’s even less popular as a sports hunting weapon. But Gerber think it’s got enough enthusiasts that it should create a mult-tool just for bow-and-arrow hunters. If this is your thing then this 5.4 inch tool could be your thing. The big tool at the front that looks a bit like a set of pliers, isn’t. It’s an adjustable wrench that adds to the 8 dedicated fold out hex wrenches and other screwdrivers.

Available from Gerber

26. Gerber Crew Served Weapons Tool

This is a multi-tool with very limited uses because you need to have either an M249 Squad Automatic Weapon or the M240 Crew Served Weapon. If you do, you’re probably in the US Army. There’s a weird looking set of wrenches and other tools. You’ll also notice that there aren’t any of the other usual tools you’re used to like a knife, pliers file, screwdrivers etc. Unless you’ve got these weapons, this is one multi-tool you don’t need to add to your collection.

Available at Gerber

27. Mininch WRENCHit

The WRENCHit doesn’t have the range of tools that most multi-tools have. But what it does have is 10 box wrenches all contained in something that looks like a metal ruler. Slide the wrench size you want to the top end of the tool and use the handle for leverage. Comes with a pouch so you won’t lose any of the wrench bits.

Available at mininch

28. Mininch Tool Pen

Think of it as a pen that doesn’t write but does contain a range of your favorite hex bits. Slide the hex bit you need out of the pen shaft and place it in the pen tip. Tighten or loosen your desired screw. How easy is that? The Tool Pen comes in a Premium edition or a full set, 3 different colors and hex bits for metric, imperial or EU tastes.

Available at mininch
